Naib Subedar Chunni Lal – India’s Highest Decorated Soldier
India’s Highest Decorated Soldier who won Sena Medal, Ashok Chakra,Vir Chakra, Naik Subedar Chuuni lal joined the 8th Battalion, of the Jammu & Kashmir light Infantry in 1984. As a young soldier, he showed extra ordinary grit, spirit, and exceptional capabilities in all the spheres of a soldier’s life, be it sports, operations or instructional field. He volunteered for the capture of Quaid Post in SIACHEN Glacier. The valour and grit displayed by Rifleman Chunni Lal while capturing the Quid Post was to be seen to be believed. For this he was awarded ‘Sena Medal’ in Jan 1988, in the operation “Rakshak”, he fought against attempted intrusion by the Pakistan Army and was instrumental in beating back the Pakistani attack on the post. He was awarded Vir Chakra forhis gallanteffort in repulsing the enemy attack. He served the UN Peacekeeping force in Somalia in 1993 and Sudan in 2006.He was also awarded Ashok Chakra Posthumously.
